SHIC Initiated Swine Disease Reporting System Expands to Include IAV
The Swine Health Information Center-funded Domestic Swine Disease Reporting System shares information on endemic and emerging diseases affecting domestic swine via monthly reports, dynamic online dashboards, SwineCast, LinkedIn, YouTube channel, and podcasts. With the addition of data on influenza A virus in April 2022, the 50th monthly report, the three most relevant swine respiratory etiologies – IAV, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae – are all included. SDRS also includes data on porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, porcine deltacoronavirus, and transmissible gastroenteritis virus.

Supreme Court to Hear NPPC Case Against Prop. 12
The U.S. Supreme Court at its Mar. 25 conference agreed to hear a case brought by the National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) against California’s Proposition 12, which bans the sale of pork from hogs born to sows that weren’t raised according to the state’s “arbitrary” production standards.
National Pork Board Offers $46K for Top Innovators in Challenge
With foreign animal disease such as African swine fever closer than ever to the United States, the National Pork Board has launched its first-ever innovation challenge that deals with the potential need of mass carcass disposal. The challenge is seeking new and innovative methods of pig mortality disposal that go beyond the existing methods of burial, incineration, composting and landfills and provide pig farmers with more options.

A team of researchers at the University of Minnesota has secured $500,000 to study how new influenza virus strains emerge, persist, and spread in pig populations–and what age, well-being, farm-production type, and epidemiological factors might help predict whether a new virus strain emerges.

Kemin is seeking a talented and dedicated Swine Technical Services Manager. This position will report to the Swine and Poultry Team Leader of Technical Services, Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – North America. The Swine Technical Services Manager is responsible for providing technical sales support to current and potential customers to demonstrate Kemin product effectiveness and establish long-term relationships with customers. The US Swine Health Improvement Plan is recruiting for a Senior Veterinarian to provide leadership in the implementation of this USDA and National Pork Board funded initiative focused initially on ASF/CSF preparedness. The incumbent will work closely with the US SHIP Senior Program Coordinator and the pilot project Administration (Investigators) to play a primary leadership role in the development and implementation of this pilot project that has the potential for positively impacting the health of US swine and US pork industry for generations to come.

The Veterinary Medical Center is a 9-veterinarian mixed animal practice in Williamsburg, Iowa focusing on swine, cow-calf, small ruminant, and companion animal. VMC Management is a full service management company that oversees 40,000 sows for independent producers and also consults with other swine farms in Iowa and Illinois. Based on the applicant’s interests and goals, 80% to 100% of responsibilities for this position will be in the area of swine health, production, and management.
