Decline of Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus and Its Complex Evolutionary Relationship with Porcine Respiratory Coronavirus in the United States

The epidemiology and genetic diversity of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) in the United States (US) was investigated by testing clinical cases for TGEV by real time RT-PCR between January 2008 and November 2016. Prevalence of TGEV ranged between 3.8-6.8% and peaked during cold months until March 2013, in which prevalence decreased to

CFIA to Implement New Import Requirements for Various Feed Ingredients March 29th to Mitigate ASF Risk

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will soon be publishing new import requirements for unprocessed grains and oilseeds as well as associated meals destined for use in livestock feed sourced from countries that have reported an active case of African Swine Fever (ASF) in domestic or wild pigs within the last 5 years. These specific ingredients were identified to be the highest risk based on a comparative analysis of livestock feed imports conducted by CFIA and they are not looking at import controls on any other feed ingredients at this time. The date of implementation for these new requirements is Friday March 29, 2019. [Source: Animal Nutrition Association of Canada 25 March 2019]

AASV Foundation-funded Report Available: Monitoring ISU VDL Data for Signs of Emerging Diseases

The Swine Disease Reporting System (SDRS) is a Swine Health Information Center-funded collaborative project that aggregates swine diagnostic data from the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, South Dakota State University Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The program produces monthly PDF reports, in addition to web dashboards describing dynamics of pathogen detection over time, specimen, age group, and geographical space. The project allows veterinarians and producers to understand macro-epidemiological aspects associated with the major swine pathogens affecting the US swine industry. The AASV Foundation recently funded a SDRS study intended to develop algorithms to detect significant changes in patterns of pathogen detection. The algorithm was developed and has been implemented to allow detecting significant increase in cases testing positive, or significant increase of cases testing negative for PRRSv, TGEv, PEDv, or PDCoV. To access the report with detailed findings please visit the AASV Foundation-funded Research page, or view the report directly. To receive the monthly SDRS reports please contact Giovani Trevisan or Daniel Linhares.

Past Presidents Rise to the Challenge

During August 2017, then AASV Foundation Chairman Dr John Waddell initiated the Past Presidents’ Challenge to help the foundation achieve its $2 million goal by the 2019 AASV 50th Anniversary Annual Meeting. Dr Waddell challenged each of his fellow past presidents to recruit at least 3 new Leman, Heritage, or Legacy donors. To count toward the goal, the donors could have been members who had yet to support the foundation at any level, or those wanting to increase their support from Leman to Heritage or from Heritage to Legacy.
