Swine Health Information Center Diagnostic Support for Emerging Disease Discovery

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) will support diagnostic fees for emerging disease discovery in approved cases. Executive director Paul Sundberg encourages swine veterinarians to pick up a brochure at the SHIC technical booth at AASV with the 2016 plan of work outlined as well as a thumb drive with fact sheets about diseases of threats. Tuesday morning in the Emerging Disease and Response General Session, Sundberg, Scott Dee, Roger Main, Corey Brown, Craig Rowles, and Doug MacDougald will talk more about enhancing preparedness as well as SHIC research results and initiatives. George Charbonneau, AASV meeting program chair, encourages all to take time to attend the Tuesday general session. It will truly challenge us to think globally and act locally. [Source: SHIC]

Swine Health Information Center Shares 2015 Progress Report at January Board Meeting and to NPB

On July 4, 2015, the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) organized as a 501(c)3 with the mission to protect and enhance the health of the United States swine herd through coordinated global disease monitoring and targeted research investments that minimize the impact of future disease threats and analysis of swine health data. SHIC reviewed 2015 accomplishments recently at a SHIC board of directors meeting and for the National Pork Board’s board of directors, both in January. A document outlining the details of 2015 accomplishments can be found under News at http://www.swinehealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/SHIC-2015-report.pdf.

Doctor-Diagnosed Health Problems in a Region with a High Density of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: A Cross-Sectional Study

There is growing interest in health risks of residents living near concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Previous research mostly focused on swine CAFOs and self-reported respiratory conditions. The aim was to study the association between the presence of swine, poultry, cattle and goat CAFOs and health of Dutch neighbouring residents using electronic medical records from general practitioners (GPs).

Characterization of the Shedding Patterns of Seneca Valley Virus (Seneca Virus A) on One Sow Farm in Minnesota

Seneca Valley Virus (or Seneca Virus A (SVA)) has been detected swine farms in the United States with an alarmingly high rate since the summer of 2015. While not a new virus to the US or the world, little was known about the shedding patterns before now. This study was designed to describe the shedding patterns on one sow farm in the South central part of Minnesota. 2 days after the onset of clinical signs, and foreign animal disease investigation, 34 sows were identified in gestation based on presence of vesicular lesions on the snout and feet. From each sow, a tonsil swab, rectal swab, lesion swab, and serum sample were collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9 weeks post outbreak. From these samples, it is suggested that SVA is shed with considerable individual variation from tonsils for 6 – 9 weeks, the feces/rectum for 4 – 6 weeks, and snout lesions for 2 weeks. Additionally, there was a short viremic period of only 1 week. The results of this study shed light on the shedding patterns of SVA and might also suggest the use of tonsil swabs, or rope samples, for herd surveillance after the initial outbreak.
