Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) Auditing: An Inside Look

Implementing VFD rulesChanges were made in how the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulates most of the feed-grade and water-soluble antibiotics you use. On January 1, 2017, many antibiotics used in U.S. animals shifted from over-the-counter status to being available only under veterinary oversight through the VFD rule. With several months of implementation complete, this is a good time to evaluate your process to ensure you continue to stay in compliance. [Source: Feedstuffs, September 19, 2017]

Doc Tales

Dr. Paul Armbrecht offered a couple of thoughts to live by credited to his father. His father is now 97 years old, so this is sage advice. First, “If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.” Even more profound, “Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.” [Editor’s note: I was afraid to ask what he did with the lawyers.]

Wanted: A Few (more) Good Tips

We’ve had several members volunteer to share a practice tip during the AASV’s Got Talent seminar at the 2018 AASV Annual Meeting in San Diego, but we could use a few more tips to fill the seminar. So give it some thought: What’s one thing you do that makes you more efficient? Impresses your clients? Helps you communicate? Makes a repetitive task quicker and easier? Simplifies sample submission? Helps you balance work and family? Keeps your day, equipment, or records organized? Whatever it is that makes you a better swine veterinarian, why not share it with your AASV colleagues? There is no paper required, and you might even win a cash prize! The 2018 Practice Tips seminar will be held in San Diego on Saturday afternoon, March 3. Please contact Dr. Jeff Harker (jharker@amvcms.com) or the AASV office (aasv@aasv.org) to volunteer – or encourage a colleague to do the same.
