Cull Program Cuts Saskatchewan Swine Herd by 10 Percent
The Saskatchewan Pork Development Board reports just over 40 of the province’s pork producers have participated in the federal Cull Breeding Swine Program and, by the time it wraps up, will have reduced the province’s total breeding herd by about ten percent. Introduced in April, the cull breeding swine program was developed by the federal government to reduce Canada’s breeding herd.

African Swine Fever Deaths in Russia Increase
An outbreak of the African swine fever virus in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of North Ossetia has killed 1,076 pigs as of July 30, according to an emergency service report.
CSF Outbreak in El Salvador
Animal health officials in San Salvador, El Salvador are reporting a new outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in San Miguel. The last reported occurrence of the disease was May 21, 2008.
Senate Funds Veterinary Student Debt Relief Program
The Senate agriculture appropriations bill marked up on July 17 included a $5 million appropriation for the National Veterinary Medical Service Act.
PCVAD Update- Viricidal Activity of Common Disinfectants against Porcine Circovirus type 2
There have been many advances in the area of protection of susceptible pigs from PCV2. Even with the recent availability of PCV2 vaccines, the disease remains an economic threat to the swine industry worldwide. In addition to interventions such as vaccines, meticulous animal husbandry and hygiene practices play a proven role in disease prevention. However, little research on the effectiveness of commercially available disinfectants against PCV2 has been reported. With this in mind, this update will review some of the available research.
2008 International PRRS Symposium — Abstract Deadline Extended
The 2008 International PRRS Symposium: “PRRSV Reverse Genetics: From the Laboratory to the Field” will be held Friday December 5, 2008 to Saturday December 6, 2008 at the downtown Marriott in Chicago. The symposium will precede the Conference of Researcher Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD).
