Emergence of Plasmid-mediated Colistin Resistance Mechanism MCR-1 in Animals and Human Beings in China: A Microbiological and Molecular Biological Study

Background Until now, polymyxin resistance has involved chromosomal mutations but has never been reported via horizontal gene transfer. During a routine surveillance project on antimicrobial resistance in commensal Escherichia coli from food animals in China, a major increase of colistin resistance was observed. When an E coli strain, SHP45, possessing colistin resistance that could be transferred to another strain, was isolated from a pig, we conducted further analysis of possible plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance. Herein, we report the emergence of the first plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance mechanism, MCR-1, in Enterobacteriaceae. Interpretation The emergence of MCR-1 heralds the breach of the last group of antibiotics, polymyxins, by plasmidmediated resistance. Although currently confined to China, MCR-1 is likely to emulate other global resistance mechanisms such as NDM-1. Our findings emphasise the urgent need for coordinated global action in the fight against pan-drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

PADRAP Plays a Role in SVA Outbreak Investigations

Why the sudden and more wide-spread resurgence of Senecavirus A (SVA)? Are there common risk factors that may increase risk of infection? What are the most common gaps in biosecurity that may have led to the introduction of this disease on a farm? Is there a way we can gather consistent, real-time information and respond quickly to an emerging or transboundary disease threat to the United States swine industry? These are a few of the questions the Outbreak Investigation Program is trying to answer. The program was originally funded by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and more recently the National Pork Board (NPB) and the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC). The program began in summer 2013 with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), was quickly adapted for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and now is being utilized with SVA cases.

ISU Offering Veterinary Student Internships in Swine Medicine

The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (ISU CVM) is seeking veterinary student applicants for two distinct, swine-specific internship programs, the Swine Medicine Applied Research Internship (SMARI) with the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC), and the Swine Veterinary Internship Program (SVIP). Both SMEC and SVIP have several openings for summer 2016 and are uniquely different programs.

PINs are In!

This is a reminder to continue to include the Premises Identification Number (PJN) on all samples submitted to the veterinary diagnostic labs. Following the PEDV outbreak in 2013, the frequency of PIN use on diagnostic submissions increased from approximately 3% to over 90%! That’s an excellent response, but PIN use needs to become routine on all laboratory submissions and other official documents. Including the PIN on PEDV samples is required in order to receive reimbursement for the cost of testing. In addition, the PIN increases the accuracy of data collection and promotes rapid identification of samples and the timely reporting of results. Do the right thing – put a PIN on it!

Register by Nov 30 for Passion for Pigs

“Passion for Pigs” concludes its Learn to Earn tour on Tuesday, December 8 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. Registrations for the popular Seminar & Trade Show are due Monday, November 30. The program includes guest speaker Dr. Mike Brumm, who will address the important topic, “Ventilation safety with foaming pits and manure pumping.” The keynote address will be presented by motivational speaker Wayne Kyle, the father of Navy Seal Chris Kyle. In honor of this American Hero, a veteran’s tribute will honor swine producers and their families who have served in the military. For more information, see www.passionforpigs.com or contact Executive Coordinator Julie Lolli: 660-651-0570, julie.nevets@nevetsrv.com.
