Modeling Risk of Occupational Zoonotic Influenza Infection in Swine Workers

Zoonotic transmission of influenza A virus (IAV) between swine and workers in swine production facilities may play a role in the emergence of novel influenza strains with pandemic potential. Guidelines to prevent transmission of influenza to swine workers have been developed but there is a need for evidence based decision-making about protective measures such as respiratory protection. A mathematical model was applied to estimate the risk of occupational IAV exposure to swine workers by contact and airborne transmission, and to evaluate the use of respirators to reduce transmission.

KSU Survey Request

Dr. Glynn Tonsor at Kansas State University invites AASV members to complete a short survey designed to gather expert opinions on animal disease biosecurity efforts in the U.S. swine industry. The survey is designed as part of an active USDA-funded grant and will help shape upcoming national surveys of producers. The survey is administered by faculty at Kansas State University. The data will only be released in summaries in which no individual’s answers can be identified. Please visit this link if you are interested in completing the swine-oriented survey: https://kstate.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0SrImDMYftYjsUt. Dr. Tonsor would like to have survey completed by April 15 if possible. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact Dr. Glynn Tonsor (gtonsor@ksu.edu ; 785-532-1518).

Iowa Pork Industry Center will Offer PQA Plus 3.0 Advisor Certification Sessions

Veterinarians, extension personnel and adult educators in Iowa’s pork industry have the opportunity to become Pork Quality Assurance Plus 3.0 Advisors under the National Pork Board’s PQA Plus 3.0 program that will be launched at the World Pork Expo in June. Because the content of this newly revised program has changed significantly, advisors who are currently certified also must successfully complete a 3.0 session if they wish to remain certified as a PQA 3.0 advisor, according to Iowa State University Extension swine veterinarian Chris Rademacher. 2015 IAV-S Surveillance Program Assessments

Internal and external program reviews were initiated in FY 2015 for APHIS’ surveillance program for influenza A virus in swine (IAV-S) to assess the program and help inform future VS budget formulation efforts. The original funding for this program was received from DHHS as part of a fiscal year (FY) 2009 supplemental appropriation in response to the H1N1 pandemic. This funding source is projected to last through FY 2016. Funding beyond FY2016 is uncertain. [Source: USDA]

MSU Swine Housing Options Tool

Members of the Michigan State University Extension pork group, with assistance from allied industry, have developed the Sow Housing Options Tool (SHOT), a financial comparison tool that enables producers to economically compare group sow housing systems. SHOT allows producers to compare the economics of various group sow housing options. Developed using a standard Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, this tool allows users to input data for different systems and calculate a cost comparison.

Where Do You Obtain Research Information?

Do you have a growing stack of veterinary research articles waiting on your desk? Do you wish for a simpler way to stay current? Please let us know.Researchers at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Canada are conducting a survey of AASV members to learn more about (1) where and why swine veterinarians get research information, (2) what you think about this process, and (3) how this process may be improved. All members of the AASV are invited to participate. That’s approximately 1400 swine health specialists in over 40 countries! Researchers believe this is the first time globally, swine veterinarians have been surveyed on how they use and access research. The fully anonymous survey is 24 multiple choice questions and is also available in French and Spanish. It will take approximately 9 minutes to complete. Your input is greatly valued. As a token thank you, respondents completing the survey by April 30th can choose to enter a random draw for a copy of the 10th Edition of Diseases of Swine. More information and the survey (REB# 16JA029) can be accessed by clicking on the link below.Thank you for considering taking part in the survey: https://uoguelph.eu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_2tmOYYzw08tL8ot
