The Task Force discussed how vets reach the decision of whether a virus that is detected in a sow farm is resident or “new different” to the farm. The Task Force elected to appoint a working group to compile some recommendations describing a process veterinarians might use to determine the status of a PRRS virus in a herd. Swine brucellosis and pseudorabies have been eliminated from commercial swine herds within the United States, but potential sources of introduction of these diseases exist and APHIS believes program modifications are necessary to address these risks. The proposed action plan presents the agency’s current thinking about the program modifications under consideration.
