Veterinary students selected to participate in the Student Seminar at the AASV Annual Meeting will reap the benefit of increased financial support from Alpharma Animal Health. The honorarium provided to students who make an oral presentation during the seminar has been increased to $750 per student. In addition, Alpharma will fund the $250 stipend awarded to each student who is selected and participates in the student poster session, new this year.

Abstracts Due for 2006 International PRRS Symposium
The 2006 International PRRS Symposium will be held at the Downtown Chicago Marriott on Friday afternoon, December 1st and Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD). Abstracts are welcome from PRRS researchers internationally. Abstracts should be submitted through the Symposium website and are due Friday, September 8, 2006.

People on the Move: Dr. Jens Christian Eskjaer Jensen
Effective August 7, Dr. Jens Christian Eskjær Jensen has assumed the position of European Technical Director-Swine at Pfizer Animal Health, based in the new European Pfizer Animal Health headquarters in Paris, France. Formerly, Dr. Jensen worked in swine practice until 1995, when he took a position at Pfizer Animal Health in Denmark first as Nordic and later as European Technical Manager-Swine. From 2002 until August of this year, Dr. Jensen worked together with Dr. Peter Høgedal in Pig Vet Consult. House of Representatives Set to Vote on Horse Slaughter Bill
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on bill H.R. 503, the “American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act”, on September 5 upon its return from the Labor Day recess. Most animal agriculture groups, including the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), as well as the AVMA and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) oppose this legislation.
PEDS Outbreak Kills Pigs in Philippines
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Syndrome (PEDS) has been blamed for the deaths of 60,000 piglets in Batangas province in the Philippines since last June.
Process approved for updating AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia
Meeting in Honolulu on July 13, the AVMA Executive Board approved a plan for updating and revising the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia Report. It was recommended by Dr. Bonnie V. Beaver, who was AVMA immediate past president at the time.

PCVAD Increases Cost of Production
Smithfield Foods’ CEO Larry Pope reportedly commented in a recent conference call that Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD) had contributed to increasing the company’s cost of production by about $1.25 per hundredweight or approximately 3% compared to the same quarter a year ago.
