USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford Announces BSE Detection

“As part of our targeted surveillance system, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the nation’s 4th case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow from central California. The carcass of the animal is being held under State authority at a rendering facility in California and will be destroyed. It was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health. Additionally, milk does not transmit BSE.

PRRS Corner: Checkoff PRRS Initiative Research Booklet

This Checkoff publication, PRRS Initiative Research 2004-2011, contains key findings and applications for PRRS based on the research funded during this time period. The book is intended to provide producers, veterinarians and veterinary researchers a resource of Checkoff research on PRRS and help with the development of herd health management strategies.

BK to Go Stall-Free, Cage-Free

Burger King Corp. said Wednesday that by 2017 it will purchase only eggs from cage-free hens and pork from suppliers that can prove they don’t use gestation stalls. The announcement affects suppliers to 7,200 Burger King restaurants in the U.S., the Miami-based fast-food giant said in a news release.

NPPC Responds to HSUS FTC Complaint

NPPC has learned that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, claiming that NPPC is “engaging in deceptive advertising related to animal well-being.” NPPC will analyze the complaint once it actually is made public and will vigorously defend against the absolutely false claims made by HSUS as set forth in a press release it issued today.

AASV 2013 Annual Meeting: Call for Veterinary Student Abstracts

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for veterinary students to make a scientific presentation at the AASV Annual Meeting in San Diego, California on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration. The submitting student must be a current (2012-13) student member of the AASV at the time of submission. Abstracts and supplementary materials must be received by Dr. Alex Ramirez (alex@aasv.org) by 11:59pm Central Daylight Time on Monday, September 24, 2012 (firm deadline).

Cephalosporins Banned in Semen Extenders

The AASV recently received some questions regarding the impact of the recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) order restricting the extra-label use of cephalosporins in food producing animals on the drug’s use in semen extenders. While acknowledging that this practice constitutes “negligible risk”, the FDA has determined that such application constitutes an extra-label use and is not exempt from the order banning such use. Therefore, the use of semen extenders containing cephalosporin is illegal.
