An Update on the Animal Disease Traceability Framework
On February 5, 2010, USDA announced a new, flexible framework for animal disease traceability in the United States. The Secretary of Agriculture and other USDA officials launched a widespread listening tour in 2010 to hear comments, concerns, and to discuss potential solutions to create a program producers can feel comfortable supporting.

Recently, the illegal pig feed additive clenbuterol was discovered in China and arrests were made. But now, it has been announced that the court in China has handed sentences to those involved. One person received a suspended death penalty.

Food, Still a Bargain
While U.S. food prices have increased lately to the distress of many, the percentage of disposable income Americans spend on food continues to shrink. According to the USDAâs Economic Research Service, that share averaged 9.4 percent during 2010, matching the record low set in 2009.
AASV Call for Research Abstracts
Plans are underway for the 43rd annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV), to take place in Denver, Colorado on March 10-13, 2012. As part of the meeting, there will be a session highlighting research projects related to swine health and production. Abstracts are now being accepted for potential presentation during the Research Topics session.

FMD Pocket Guide Now Available for Purchase
AASV members in the U.S. recently received a copy of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) educational pocket guide. The laminated flipchart contains photos illustrating lesions associated with FMD in domestic and feral swine. This pocket guide was developed through a cooperative agreement funded by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and is the collaborative effort of AASV, ISU’s Center for Food Security and Public Health, National Pork Board and USDA APHIS.
