White House Issues Strategy to Combat Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) released a report to the President, Combating Antibiotic Resistance. The report was released simultaneously with a National Strategy on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria as well as with a Presidential Executive Order, emphasizing to the Nation the importance of addressing this growing challenge. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) estimates that annually at least two million illnesses and 23,000 deaths are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the United States alone.

PEDV: Assessing Biosecurity in the Feed Supply Chain – UMN ADVET-S Course

The University of Minnesota’s ADVET-S program is offering a course on Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus “Assessing Biosecurity in the Swine Feed Supply Chain” which will be held October 6 -19, 2014. This course will be conducted by faculty from the University of Minnesota including Dr. Peter Davies, Dr. Tim Snider, and Dr. Montserrat Torremorell. As well, Dr Laura Greiner (Carthage), Dr Joel Nerem (Pipestone), and Dr Cassandra Jones (KSU) will share their perspectives as swine professionals focusing on feed biosecurity. Webinar dates for the course are Tuesday October 7th 6:30 am – 7:30 am CST and Tuesday October 14th 6:30 am – 7:30 am CST, as well as an interactive conference call discussion on Thursday October 9th 6:30 am – 7:30 am CST.
