2012 Podcast Series: Jeff Schoening

During the AASV Annual Meeting, 30 veterinary students interviewed conference speakers to gain additional information about their presentation topic. Upcoming Conference: Carthage Veterinary Service 22nd Annual Swine Conference

Carthage Veterinary Service, Ltd is preparing for the 22nd Annual Swine Conference to be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. This conference is attended by more than 500 people and 50 companies and is recognized as a key educational meeting for all aspects of pig production. The conference includes short science and practical presentations with in-depth breakout sessions appealing to staff, owners, lenders, and suppliers.

Registration Opens for 2012 USAHA/AAVLD Annual Meeting

Plans are well underway for the 116th United States Animal Health Association (USAHA) and 55th American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians Annual Meeting. The meeting will take place October 18-24, 2012 at the Greensboro Sheraton Hotel in Greensboro, NC. The event brings together leaders and stakeholders from across the country to address the most pressing issues in livestock and poultry disease, regulations, diagnostics and research in the United States. Registration is open to anyone interested in the mission of USAHA and AAVLD to safeguard the health of the US herds and flocks. Iowa Swine Days 2012: A new education partnership between Iowa State University and Iowa pork producers

Iowa State University and the Iowa Pork Producers Association have teamed up to develop a new 1-day event that focuses on topics with plenty of take home applications. Selected topics include pit foaming, risk management, personnel management, lowering feed costs, swine welfare, PRRS and pork exports. Thus, the program will cover a wide range of subjects, from veterinary medicine to agriculture engineering, from economics to animal science. They are clearly focused on people who work in the barn on a daily basis, or people who work with them. At the end of the day, producers should have a menu of practical ideas they can take home and potentially apply on their farm.

Abstracts for Leman Conference Due July 15

It’s time to submit abstracts for presentation at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference. July 15 is the last date abstracts will be accepted for the poster session, which will be held Sunday, September 16, from 5-7 pm at the Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel. Details regarding abstract format and submission are available at http://www.LemanSwineConference.org. Registration for the conference is open and available online as well. The 2012 Leman Conference will take place Saturday, September 15 through Tuesday, September 18 at the St. Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Accreditation Renewal

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced that its National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) will begin the veterinary accreditation renewal process this summer for some accredited veterinarians. SMEC Offers New Course:Swine Production Management and Consultation

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) is offering a new class, SMEC481, focusing on swine production management and consultation starting in the fall of 2012. The course will be offered to 4th year veterinary students as a 1 or 2 week long clinical rotation. Upcoming course dates will be October 22 – November 4, 2012 (after SMEC480 course) and March 18 – 31, 2013 (prior to a SMEC480 course). Students can enroll in the course as a 2 week rotation for 2 credits or as a 1 week course for 1 credit.

NC229 PRRSV Meeting & Swine Viral Diseases abstracts at 2012 CRWAD

On Sunday, Dec. 2nd 1 PM to 5 PM, the NC229 “Detection and Control of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus and Emerging Viral Diseases of Swine” will be meeting in Chicago for the NC229 Annual Meeting. The meeting will consist of various presentations and discussions on how to move forward with the goals of the project, the re-writing of the next 5 year NC229 grant and future trends for the continuation of funding of PRRSV by USDA, commodity groups and industry. In addition, Dr. Peter Johnson and Dr. Margo Holland will be giving updates on USDA funding and emphasis of research direction on the international and national level. AASV 2013 Annual Meeting: Call for Veterinary Student Abstracts

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for veterinary students to make a scientific presentation at the AASV Annual Meeting in San Diego, California on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration. The submitting student must be a current (2012-13) student member of the AASV at the time of submission. Abstracts and supplementary materials must be received by Dr. Alex Ramirez (alex@aasv.org) by 11:59pm Central Daylight Time on Monday, September 24, 2012 (firm deadline).

2012 International PRRS Symposium: Registration and Abstract Submission Now Open!

This is the second announcement for the 2012 International PRRS Symposium. Registration is now open! The symposium will be held November 29-November 30, 2012, at the Marriott KC Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the National Swine Improvement Federation (NSIF) and Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. A draft agenda is available online.
