AASVF Thanks Auction Donors

The AASV Foundation would like to thank all of people and allied industries that have donated items for the auction to be held on Monday night during the AASV Annual meeting in Omaha, NE. The deadline for donations has now passed and the auction booklet is being printed in preparation for distribution. Now the important thing is that everyone participates in the auction to make this fund-raising effort a great success.

Veterinary Student Internship Opportunities

Are you a veterinary student looking for a summer job that will help you gain valuable career experience and build your resume? This paid position with Circle H Headquarters provides both wages and housing and will balance your time between gaining experience alongside our staff, as well as working independently on practical research projects. In the past, projects have been suitable for submission for the student competition at AABP or AASV meetings. The submission deadline is February 19, 2010. Application information and job description can be found at the following link: http://www.circleh.info/jobs/jobs.htm. Note: Circle H is just one of many veterinary practices offering internship opportunities for students! AASV student members are invited to browse the listings (and practitioners are invited to add their internship opportunities) at http://www.aasv.org/employment/.

New Opportunity to Meet Our Finest AASV Student Members!

At this year’s AASV annual meeting, the AASV Student Recruitment Committee will be coordinating a “speed interview” session for AASV practitioners to meet veterinary students interested in swine practice. To make this successful, we need AASV members to volunteer to participate in this event. Any veterinarian who is interested in hiring a new graduate, providing externship opportunities, or desiring to meet the best and brightest swine veterinary students is invited to participate. The interview session will be held Saturday, March 6 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the conference hotel. If you are interested in participating, please contact Amy Woods (awoods@advancedvetservices.com) by February 8.

Veterinary Students: Meet Swine Practitioners from Across the Country!

The AASV is coordinating a “speed interview” process for 3rd and 4th year AASV student members to participate in at this year’s annual meeting. If you are looking for a job or externship opportunity, don’t miss this event! We will have AASV members present that may have opportunities for you. We will also have members leading the AASV organization present for you to meet and network with. As a student, it is essential to network and get to know swine practitioners who may be good resources in your job or externship hunt. Space for students is limited, so reserve your space soon. The interviews will take place Saturday, March 6, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the conference hotel. Student participants should bring along a brief resume of their swine experience. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Amy Woods (awoods@advancedvetservices.com or 219-863-0871).

“Wanted: Veterinarians to participate in this year’s “”Vet Hunt”” at the AASV Annual Meeting”

The AASV Annual Meeting provides a perfect opportunity for veterinary students to establish relationships with practicing veterinarians. To facilitate this networking, we will again offer the “Vet Hunt” contest at this year’s Annual Meeting. Students will be challenged to meet as many of the veterinarians as they can from a specified list of volunteers during the first couple days of the meeting. The three students who speak with the most veterinarians will receive prizes, provided by Intervet/Schering-Plough during the Student Reception. This is where you – AASV member veterinarians – come in! Contact Daren Miller, AASV Student Delegate, (miller78@purdue.edu) if you would be willing to participate in this fun activity. The students will appreciate it!

Veterinary Accreditation Changes Effective February 1

The USDA is enacting sweeping changes of the veterinary accreditation program beginning February 1, 2010. The National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) will require all accredited veterinarians to select between two categories of accreditation and will require continuing education prior to renewal. Although accreditation is a voluntary program, the United States depends extensively on accredited veterinarians to carry out many of its animal health programs and services–including animal inspections, testing, and certifications. Accredited veterinarians serve as the first line of defense in ensuring the health of the Nation’s livestock.

AASV Committees to Meet at the Annual Meeting
