Kansas Bans Feral Swine Hunts
Feral swine hunts for profit are now illegal in Kansas resulting in fines of $5000 per day for organizing a hunt and $5,000 per pig that is deliberately released into the wild.

Antimicrobial Drugs and Community-acquired Clostridium difficile?associated Disease, UK
In a population-based case-control study of community-acquired Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD), we matched 1,233 cases to 12,330 controls. CDAD risk increased 3-fold with use of any antimicrobial agent and 6-fold with use of fluoroquinolones. Prior use of antimicrobial agents did not affect risk for CDAD after 6 months.

Pigs in Six States Possibly Exposed to Melamine-tainted Feed
Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have determined that hogs on 10 farms in as many as six states may have been exposed to pet food contaminated with the chemical melamine which has been linked to a number of cat and dog deaths in recent weeks.
Two Wisconsin Swine Herds Confirmed PRV Positive
A second Clark County Wisconsin swine herd was confirmed Pseudorabies (PRV) positive by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on April 23rd.
PRRS Risk Assessment Training at Expo
Another opportunity is being offered for AASV members interested in receiving training on the AASV’s PRRS Risk Assessment Tool. The training will take place on Thursday June 7th 8:00am – noon in the Varied Industries Building at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. Successful completion of a training session is required to obtain a copy of the Risk Assessment Tool.

Seven swine practitioners – recent graduates to seasoned veterans – met last fall to develop the AASV’s latest offering of continuing education. The result, Advanced Techniques for Swine Veterinarians, is a combination of lecture and lab presentations designed to provide AASV members with cutting-edge tools and skills to enhance their value in today’s challenging practice environment. Enrollment is limited for the two-day program, which features sessions on information management, diagnostics, reproduction, and project management. The conference is scheduled for June 4-6 in Ames, Iowa, just prior to the World Pork Expo in Des Moines.
