AASV-L Simplified

Have you noticed a trend in your practice and wonder if others have, too? Do you need help with a difficult case or could you use advice regarding treatment options? Or do you like to hear about cases that other swine practitioners are encountering? The AASV-L email discussion list is designed to allow members to benefit from the knowledge and advice of colleagues around the world. Sometimes the AASV-L messages can appear cluttered or confusing; here are a few tips to help you streamline AASV-L and make it easy to use:

Everything you need to customize the delivery and appearance of your AASV-L subscription is available from the Members page of the AASV Web site; just click the AASV-L link under the "Welcome" greeting (or go directly to AASV-L at http://www.aasv.org/members/aasv-l.php). Since AASV-L is a members-only feature, you will need to log in with your AASV username and password. Once there, you can subscribe, unsubscribe, or change the email address used to deliver AASV-L messages. You can also change some additional delivery options.

The first item under "Options" – Digest Mode – will have a dramatic effect on how you receive and reply to AASV-L messages. By default, AASV-L messages are delivered in DIGEST mode. This means that all messages submitted to AASV-L are combined into a single "digest" e-mail message for that day. This avoids cluttering your email box with messages transmitted throughout the day. However, if you (or others) hit "Reply" to respond to a message in digest mode and you don’t delete the original message from your response (or at least the part that doesn’t apply), the digest quickly lengthens as the original messages are repeated in the next digest – sometimes multiple times, especially if there is more than one topic with multiple responses. That can make it difficult to "wade through" the digest and separate the responses from the original postings.

If you’ve experienced this difficulty, you may wish to change this option and receive AASV-L messages INDIVIDUALLY. This means that each time someone submits a message to AASV-L, it will be transmitted to you as a separate message as soon as it is approved by the moderator. If there’s a hot topic, you’ll receive a few more messages in your email Inbox, but they’ll be clearly labeled for subject and you’ll receive them in a more "real-time" fashion. To date, use of AASV-L has not been especially heavy, so the individual message format is not likely to clog your Inbox.
