ASF Continues Spread in Russia

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture and Food has reported a new outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).

The virus has continued to spread following its detection on November 19, 2007. This latest outbreak involves two swine farms located in Gorkaya Balka village, Sovetsky, Stavropolskiy Kray. The farms are comprised of 900 pigs of which 161 have exhibited clinical signs and 127 have died. No animals were reported to have been destroyed nor slaughtered although stamping out is being applied according to the official reports.

Reportedly, the source of this outbreak was likely contact with animals from affected areas of North Ossetia.

This is the fifth Russian administrative division affected. There have been 21 reported outbreaks since the epizootic began. Control measures have been implemented according to the official report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). There is no vaccine for ASF.
