The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for up to 15 veterinary students to make a scientific presentation during the Student Seminar at the AASV annual meeting on Sunday, March 9, 2008 in San Diego, California. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration. Abstracts and supplementary materials must be received by Dr. Alex Ramirez by midnight on Friday, September 21, 2007 (firm deadline). Faxes are acceptable. Late abstracts will not be considered. The abstracts will be reviewed by an unbiased, professional panel consisting of a private practitioner, an academician at a school from which no students have submitted an abstract, and an industry veterinarian. Students whose papers are selected for presentation at the meeting will be notified by October 15, 2007 and will be expected to provide the complete paper or abstract for publication by November 15, 2007.

Trent Loos has been announced as a speaker at the 2007 George Young Swine Conference, to be held Thursday, August 16 at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City, Nebraska. In his motivational presentations, Loos addresses bridging the gap between food producers and consumers. His radio show, Loos Tales, airs on more than 100 radio stations across the Midwest.
DHS Begins NBAF Site Visits
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced its schedule for conducting site visits for the remaining consortia under consideration to house the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) which will replace the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.
Sow porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) status effect on litter mortality in postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)
Previous studies have described a “litter effect” associated with mortality in postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) affected farms. The main objective of this study was to evaluate litter mortality in different PMWS affected farms and to characterize it in relation to three variables of the sow: parity, porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infectious status and PCV2 antibody titres.
Hearings to Address Livestock and Meat Issues
The House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock plans to hold a hearing on the livestock and meat industries on April 17. A portion of the meeting will focus on USDA’s “Livestock and Meat Marketing Study” released in February.
Animal Welfare Requirements for Federal Meat Purchases
Congressmen Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chris Shays (R-CT) have introduced H.R. 1726, the “Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act,” which would require the federal government to purchase meat, dairy and egg products from producers who meet certain animal welfare standards.
NPPC Seeks Veterinary Participation
