CDC Releases First Report on Animal Contact Outbreaks

According to CDC’s first report on animal contact outbreaks, 59 outbreaks of enteric (intestinal) disease were linked to contact with animals or their environment in 2017. Information in the report comes from CDC’s Animal Contact Outbreak Surveillance System, which is part of the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). State, local, and territorial public health agencies submit reports of enteric disease outbreaks through NORS. [Source: CDC 17 August 2020]

People on the Move, New Grad Edition: Dr. Sophie Leone

AASV welcomes Dr. Sophie Leone to the veterinary profession! Upon receiving her DVM from Colorado State University, Dr. Leone accepted a position as a Field Veterinarian for Country View Family Farms (CVFF), where she serves as a swine veterinarian for the company’s vertically integrated production system, based out of Pennsylvania. Mental Health First Aid Training Workshops in Iowa; Free for Veterinarians and Agribusiness Professionals

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course offered by trained facilitators and is listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. Individuals will learn how to identify, understand and respond to those who may be experiencing a mental health related problem or crisis. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering several Mental Health First Aid workshops throughout Iowa during 2020 with free registration for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other agribusiness professionals with code ADVOCATE. AVMA Issues Inaugural Report Detailing Antimicrobial Resistance in Animals

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the leading advocate for the veterinary profession, today released Antimicrobial Resistant Pathogens Affecting Animal Health in the United States, a comprehensive report detailing the impact of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria on different animal species in the United States. It is the first report highlighting the important role veterinarians play as part of the overall One Health approach to combating antimicrobial resistance through stewardship. Call for Abstracts: AASV Student Seminar

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for veterinary students to make a scientific presentation at the AASV Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration. The submitting student must be a current (2020-21) student member of the AASV at the time of submission and must not have graduated from veterinary school prior to February 28, 2021. Submissions are limited to one (1) abstract per student.
