The National Pork Board is pleased to offer a scientific poster session as part of the 2017 Pig Welfare Symposium (PWS) to be held November 7-9, 2017 in Des Moines, IA. The symposium will provide a forum for sharing ideas, learning from other segments of the industry and fostering dialogue on animal welfare-related issues. Specific objectives of the symposium are to improve the well-being of pigs by disseminating recent research findings and recommendations, raising awareness of current and emerging issues, and identifying potential solutions.

Registration is now open for the Veterinary Biologics Training Program, May 15-19, 2017 in Ames, Iowa. This well-known program provides an overview of the USDA regulatory process for assuring the purity, safety, potency and efficacy of veterinary biologics (vaccines, bacterins, antisera, diagnostic kits and other products of biological origin).
Introduction to Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis
Systematic reviews and meta-analysis are increasingly being used to summarize and synthesize the literature – from treatment options in humans or in animals, to evaluating complex interventions or risk factors. We are pleased to announce a series of workshops on conducting systematic reviews and meta-analysis that might be of interest. The series will be offered in the UK or in the US in the summer of 2017. Participants can either take the systematic review module, the meta-analysis module, or both modules. Although the emphasis is on food and feed, the principles apply across a range of topic areas – so all are welcome! There are no specific pre-requisites, but participants should have some background in designing research studies and in basic statistical methods. Position Announcement: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Animal Science
The Department of Animal Science, Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with extension, research and teaching responsibilities, with a primary emphasis on extension. The extension responsibilities include developing educational materials to be used in extension education programs that contribute to improving the efficiency of Pennsylvania’s swine industry, including collaboration as an active member of the Extension Livestock Team. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a robust, federally-funded applied research program independently and collaboratively with colleagues in the department, with possible areas of focus including one or more of the following: nutrition, herd health, behavior, nutrient management or reproductive biology. The College houses a world-class nutrient management research program and the department includes a strong group of reproductive biologists who represent the nucleus of the university-wide Center for Reproductive Biology and Health. Research will be conducted independently and collaboratively with colleagues in the Department, other appropriate academic units, other Universities, and/or industry. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching or co-teaching undergraduate courses in swine production and management and other areas of animal science consistent with the successful candidate’s expertise. The successful applicant will be involved in advising undergraduate and graduate students.

Position Announcement: Swine Medicine Education Center Fellowship
The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for post-DVM fellowships. This fellowship position is at the center of swine medicine in the United States and would routinely interact with the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, state and federal animal health agencies, most of the top twenty-five pork production companies in the US and a wide range of international veterinarians, scientists and producers. Current fellows have been among the first to investigate field cases of Seneca Valley Virus, leaders in developing an infectious lameness model and published the first study demonstrating NSAID delivery to piglets through the sow’s milk. The successful applicant will be involved in clinical instruction of domestic and international veterinary students, applied research focused on swine medicine, and field investigations of disease outbreaks in client herds.

This is a field-based Swine Technical Services position to support the sales and marketing efforts for Merck Animal Health. Candidate must have a veterinary medicine degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in veterinary medicine focusing on modern swine production. Additionally, this position will assist with pharmacovigilance activities for the Swine Business Unit.
