Swine Practitioners: Will You Mentor a Veterinary Student?

The AASV Foundation is pleased to announce that the National Pork Industry Foundation has renewed funding for the NPIF Internship Stipend for 2016. This program, now in its eighth year, provides internship opportunities to six veterinary students who are interested in swine medicine but have limited means to gain experience early in their education. The AASV Student Recruitment Committee is seeking six US swine practitioners to be mentors for the students. Commitments include answering one student’s questions regarding the industry throughout the year and hosting the student for a minimum of 1 month in the summer. If you are interested in being a practitioner mentor, please contact Dr. Chase Stahl at cstahl@fmtvets.com or 515-851-7822. The AASV Student Recruitment Committee developed the program to link each selected first- or second-year veterinary student with a practitioner mentor for 1 year. During the summer, the student is required to spend 1 month under the practitioner’s guidance in the field. The $3300 stipend provided to each student is meant to defer costs of travel, lodging and compensation for the 1-month period. The student is encouraged to attend the AASV Annual Meeting, where a dinner will be held for mentors and interns to meet and make plans for the summer.

Recognizing European Union (EU) and EU Member State Regionalization Decisions for ASF

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is advising the public that the agency is adding European Union (EU) and EU Member State-defined regions of the EU to the APHIS list of regions affected with African swine fever (ASF). APHIS will recognize as affected with ASF any region of the EU that the EU or any EU Member State has placed under restriction because of detection of ASF. These regions currently include portions of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, and all of Sardinia. APHIS will list the EU- and EU Member State-defined regions as a single entity. The agency is therefore removing Sardinia as an individually listed region from the APHIS list of ASF affected regions. APHIS is taking this action because of the detection of ASF in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
