Dr. Thayer Hoover Passes Away

Dr. Thayer “Zip” Hoover, 57, or Spirit Lake, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. Dr. Hoover received his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 1982. He worked at Pfizer and Zoetis for more than two decades, and had been an AASV member since 1988.Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, June 26 at Spirit Life Fellowship (2504 Enterprise Ave) in Spirit Lake, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 27 at 10:00 am, also at Spirit Life Fellowship. ASF, FMD Swine Surveillance Pilot Project

The United States swine industry and USDA need your help. AASV, National Pork Board and National Pork Producers Council support USDA’s pilot project to evaluate a foreign animal disease (FAD) surveillance system. As part of comprehensive and integrated surveillance, select diagnostic labs now have the ability to test case-qualifying samples for African swine fever (ASF) and foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the same way they have been testing for classical swine fever (CSF) since 2009.

Position Announcement: Clinical Research Attending Veterinarian

The Clinical Research/Attending Veterinarian, based in DeSoto, Kansas, is responsible for providing veterinary oversight to the care and use of laboratory animals (primarily livestock – swine, cattle and horses and some companion research animals) at Merck Animal Health. He/She is responsible for ensuring that humane, legal, ethical, efficient, and scientifically sound research is conducted. In addition to primary care, responsibilities also include training, representation on the IACUC, and facilitating communication between Animal Services/Research Facility and Research and Development departments and Regulatory Agencies.

Position Announcement: Senior Vice President of Science and Technology

The National Pork Board is seeking a dynamic Senior Vice President of Science and Technology. This position will require an innovative leader to oversee the development and coordination of all Science and Technology department programs as they relate to pork production. This includes swine health, animal welfare, production sciences, pork safety and quality, producer and public health and sustainability. This person will have regular communication with pork producers, veterinarians, press, academia and researchers, and state and federal officials. S/he will direct long range planning on National Pork Board programs related to Science and Technology Department Program Areas. This leader should be driven by a desire for continuous improvement and be a champion for change. Knowledge of National Pork Board Policies/Practices is helpful.

Obituary: Janet Brumm

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing on June 21 of Janet Brumm, the wife of AASV member Dr. Mike Brumm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato, MN. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. at Northview – North Mankato Mortuary with a 7:00 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday morning. A second memorial service will be held Friday June 26, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 4:00 p.m. in Wayne, Nebraska. Burial will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
