Swine Veterinary Internship Program – Summer 2013

The Swine Veterinary Internship Program (SVIP) is accepting student applications for two types of summer positions. SVIP will have several “flex” interns based out of Ames, IA and numerous “dedicated” interns assigned to a particular veterinary practice or swine production system for the 12 week long program. These roles provide students a multitude of opportunities to work not only with the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory personnel and swine faculty, but also with swine producers and veterinarians across the country, network with other students from various colleges of veterinary medicine, and interact with pharmaceutical industry representatives (including technical services veterinarians, sales force, marketing team, and research and development).

Introductory Herd Health Investigation Online Course

The online course, offered by Massey University, gives an overview of population health and food animal production management relevant in the context of your working environment. This will include an overview of epidemiology, management of herd health and monitoring of production. A large proportion of the second segment of the course will focus on applied learning and will be predominantly activity-based.

Boehringer Ingelheim Encourages Vets, Researchers to Submit PRRS Research Proposals

For the last 10 years, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) has contributed $75,000 annually through its Advancement in PRRS Research Awards to fund three selected research programs. According to Tara Donovan, DVM, president of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV), ongoing research efforts have been successful in helping producers and veterinarians learn more about the disease and how to more effectively manage it. “These studies have generated a tremendous amount of knowledge and data about the PRRS virus, how it is transmitted and how to better control it,” Donovan says. “But additional research is still needed as we have a long way to go to, hopefully, eradicate PRRS and help swine producers be more productive.”

Canadian Pork Producers Hope for Resolution to U.S. M-COOL Issue Without Retaliatory Tariffs

The executive director of the Canadian Pork Council says Canada’s pork producers are hopeful the U.S. will avoid the prospects of retaliatory tariffs by bringing Mandatory Country of Origin Labelling into compliance with its international trade obligations. In July the World Trade Organization upheld a November 2011 Dispute Settlement Panel ruling that U.S. Mandatory Country of Origin Labelling discriminates against imported livestock and is inconsistent with U.S. trade obligations. Earlier this month a WTO arbitrator gave the United States until May 23rd to bring the labelling measure into compliance or face the prospects of retaliatory tariffs. Canadian Pork Council executive director Martin Rice says the hope of the Canadian pork industry is to see the U.S. implement the corrective action necessary to remove the discrimination and avoid the need for retaliation.
