17th Annual ISU Swine Disease Conference

The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Iowa Pork Industry Center, The Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association, and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV), District 6, are sponsoring the 17th Annual Swine Disease Conference. The conference will be held at the Scheman Building, in Ames, IA on November 5 – 6, 2009.

Applicants sought for Alternate Student Delegate on AASV Board of Directors

The AASV Student Recruitment Committee is accepting applications for veterinary students interested in serving as the Alternate Student Delegate on the AASV Board of Directors. This student will represent student interests and serve as a non-voting member of the AASV board. This experience will provide the student with a unique perspective of the inner workings of the AASV. The term of service is 2 years; the first year as alternate student delegate, and the second year as the student delegate.

$3300 Veterinary Internship Grants enable swine experience

For the second year, the National Pork Industry Foundation (NPIF) has provided funding for six freshman or sophomore veterinary students in the United States to gain experience in the swine industry, via a summer internship with a swine practitioner. The NPIF Veterinary Internship program pairs students with a swine practitioner-mentor for a one-month summer internship. Each of the six students receives a stipend of $3300 to defray the cost of participating in the internship. Grant recipients are encouraged to attend the AASV 2010 Annual Meeting and the 2010 Leman Conference, and must submit a written summary and evaluation of their experiences upon completion of the program. The AASV Student Recruitment Committee coordinates the selection of the grant recipients. Funding for the program is administered by the AASV Foundation.

2009 International PRRS Symposium Announced

The 2009 International PRRS Symposium: “Molecular, Immunological, Genetic and Epidemiological Approaches for PRRSV Control” will be held Friday December 4, 2009 to Saturday December 5, 2009 at the downtown Marriott in Chicago. Website: http://www.prrssymposium.org. The symposium will precede the Conference of Researcher Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD).

AASV Announces 2010 Student Seminar participants

The AASV is pleased to announce the program for the Student Seminar at the 2010 AASV Annual Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. Forty-four veterinary students from eleven universities submitted abstracts for consideration. A panel of three veterinarians representing private practice, industry, and academia reviewed and scored the abstracts to select fifteen for oral presentation at the meeting. The panel also approved a number of abstracts for poster presentation.

AASV Foundation Names Auction Committee

In preparation for the AASV Foundation Auction during the 2010 AASV Annual Meeting in Omaha, NE, the AASV Foundation has named the following AASV members to the auction committee: Matt Anderson, Butch Baker, John Baker, Joe Connor, Scott Dee, Tom Gillespie, Peggy Anne Hawkins, Randy Jones, Darrell Neuberger, Daryl Olsen, Max Rodibaugh, Larry Rueff, Paul Ruen, Gordon Spronk and Tom Wetzell. The committee is co-chaired by Rod Johnson and Warren Wilson with support from the AASV staff.

There have been some questions regarding the references requested on the application. Please do NOT send letters of recommendation. It is only necessary to provide the contact information for references on the application. The review committee will contact the references as deemed necessary.
