Responsible Pork Symposium Opens Dialogue on Pork Chain Responsibility
More than 150 pork chain professionals attended the first annual Responsible Pork Symposium, held Feb. 5-7, at the Omni Severin Hotel in Indianapolis, Ind. Attendees included representatives from all segments of the pork food chain including consumers, university leaders, retailers, nutritionists, veterinarians, producers, packers, activists, government officials and general industry consultants.

AASV Spouse Tour will expand if enough interest
The AASV San Diego Spouse Tour has proven to be very popular! Currently, the tour is full and we have a waiting list for those interested in participating. However, if there is enough additional interest (we need about 10 more people), we will reserve another bus and expand the tour. If you (or your spouse or family members) are interested in participating in the tour and have not already been placed on the waiting list, please send an email message to aasv@aasv.org to let us know. The tour features a harbor cruise of San Diego Bay, followed by lunch at Casa Guadalajara and a visit to historic Old Town San Diego. Smithfield to cut sow herd by up to 5 percent
Smithfield Foods said it will cut its U.S. sow herd by 4 percent to 5 percent — or 40,000 to 50,000 sows — a move that will ultimately result in production of 800,000 to 1 million fewer market hogs annually.
People on the Move: Dr. Walter Heuser
Dr. Walter Heuser recently joined the swine team at Pfizer Animal Health Canada. Dr. Heuser has been working with Pfizer as a technical support veterinarian on a part-time basis since April 2007, but will now be a part of the marketing team in his new, full-time role with the company. He was formerly owner and partner at Sheridan, Heuser, Provis Swine Health Services in Steinbach, Manitoba. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is advising the public that a risk analysis has been prepared by the APHIS concerning the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) status of the Republic of South Africa and the related disease risks associated with importing animals and animal products into the United States from the Republic of South Africa.
