As part of its planned annual schedule, the American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation seeks research proposals for funding in 2007. Up to $12,000 will be disbursed, with a maximum of $6000 ($US) awarded per project. Proposals are due January 31, 2007. The selection and announcement of projects for funding will take place in March.

Thomson Named 2006 Honorary Master Pork Producer
The Iowa Pork Producers Association selected Dr. John U. Thomson, dean at the Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and AASV member, as the recipient of the 2006 Honorary Master Pork Producer Award. The award is given annually for outstanding service to advance the pork industry in Iowa. It is the highest award bestowed by the association. Dr. Thomson received the award during the Iowa Pork Congress banquet on Wednesday, January 24.
People on the Move: Dr. Jennifer Greiner
Dr. Jennifer Greiner has accepted a position as Corporate Affairs Associate for Elanco Animal Health in Greenfield, Indiana, where she will be supporting Elanco’s US sales and marketing teams, developing communications and monitoring state and federal legislative initiatives. Obituary: Dr. Jason James
Dr. Jason E. James, Sullivan, Illinois, passed away Sunday, January 21. Dr. James was a former AASV member and 1983 Swine Practitioner of the Year. His obituary follows.

PRRS-CAP to hold workshop during AASV conference
In an effort to provide an overview of PRRS research progress and obtain input from AASV annual meeting attendees, the USDA PRRS CAP (Coordinated Agricultural Program) will be conducting a workshop in conjunction with the AASV Annual Meeting in Orlando. The workshop will take place on Saturday, March 3 from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon at the Doubletree Hotel at the Entrance to Universal Orlando. There is no registration needed for the workshop, which is open to all AASV annual meeting attendees.
San Diego to host 2008 AASV Annual Meeting
The AASV Annual Meeting will move from this year’s southeastern US location to the opposite side of the country in 2008. The AASV Executive Committee recently selected San Diego, California as the site for the 2008 AASV Annual Meeting, to be held March 8-11 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina.
Horse Slaughter Bills Reintroduced
Bills were reintroduced in both the U.S. House and Senate to amend the Horse Protection Act to prevent the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
Space-Age Tools Boost Food Safety, Quality
Portable inspection devices that detect food safety and quality problems are being developed by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists. Recent food safety outbreaks highlight the need for “space-age” ways to prevent such problems at every step in the food production process–from farm field to grocery store or restaurant.
AMI Calls on USDA to Appoint Biofuels Working Group
The American Meat Institute (AMI) and several national producer organizations called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to assemble a panel within the Office of the Chief Economist to study the emerging biofuels economy and its implications for livestock producers and animal agriculture.
